For Poland’s mining region, coal remains a way of life

Poland’s southern coal mining city of Katowice is hosting the UN’s COP24 climate conference tasked with curbing global greenhouse gas emissions. Among Europe’s most polluted cities, it is located at the heart of the Silesian coal basin where tens of thousands of families rely on mining “black gold” for a living. The job is lucrative but also deadly.
