Remembering the human side of Koko the gorilla

With a sign language vocabulary of more than a 1,000 words and the ability to understand thousands more, Koko was a scientific marvel and source of wonder for decades. The Western Lowland gorilla, who died this week at the age of 46, captured the world’s attention not just for her communication skills, but also for her displays of human-like emotions.
