Saving Vietnam’s Critically Endangered Pangolins

PANGOLINS, the most illegally trafficked mammal in the world, have finally been given worldwide protection from commercial international trade. At the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), delegates agreed to move all eight critically endangered species of pangolin onto CITES Aappendix one I -– meaning that commercial trade will be heavily restricted and international trade is now banned, helping to prevent the gentle creatures’ extinction. They have become a popular delicacy and their scales are sold as medicine for as much $450 per kilogram. For more information on pangolins go to http://www.arkive.org/c/pangolins/
