Oil spill disaster near world heritage site ‘irreversible’ | ABC News
The Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands says the environmental damage caused by oil that’s leaked from a ship wrecked on an island in the country’s south is extensive and mostly irreversible.
The stricken ship, named Solomon Trader, ran aground on Rennell Island, the largest raised coral atoll in the world.
Tonnes of heavy fuel oil is leaking into the ocean not far from a UNESCO world heritage site. Pacific affairs reporter Liam Fox has the story.
