Will U.S. sanctions have an effect on the turmoil in Venezuela?

Today the United States Treasury Department issued financial sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro a day after he won a sweeping victory in a nationwide referendum to rewrite the country’s constitution.

Venezuelan authorities say that more than 8 million people turned out to vote, though monitoring groups said the number who actually voted could be less than half that.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called it a “sham election.”

Protesters swarmed the streets Sunday, putting up barricades in the streets and violently clashing with police. Reports indicate that as many as 10 died in the country on Sunday.

Over the past four months, more than 120 people have died protesting the Maduro regime and nationwide poverty and food insecurity.

Nicholas Casey is covering the turmoil in Venezuela for The New York Times. After reporting extensively from within the country for the last eight months, Casey and The Times were banned from reentering the country by the Maduro regime. He is now based in Bogotá, Colombia.
